Curtains Up!

Participating high schools are invited to submit both plays and musicals for adjudication during the school year. Please refer to the following list to ensure the play and/or musical being submitted meets MVHSTA requirements.

The Performance Detail Form is below the information about what qualifies as a musical and what qualifies as a play.

Musicals

Musical theatre productions should fall into one or more of the following categories:

• A published musical, operetta, or review (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission from the original creators or their representatives.
• A new or unpublished musical, operetta, or review (featuring an original script, music, and lyrics) presented with the approval or permission from the original creators or their representatives.
• An original musical theatre compilation featuring excerpts or scenes from a variety of sources (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission of the original creators or their representatives.
• Registration must be completed by the theatre director or official representative from the school. Students may not register productions on behalf of their school.

Plays

Plays should fall into one or more of the following categories:

• A published play (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission from the original creators or their representatives.
• A new or unpublished play (featuring an original script) presented with the approval or permission from the original creators or their representatives.
• An original play featuring excerpts or scenes from a variety of sources (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission of the original creators or their representatives.
• Registration must be completed by the theatre director or official representative from the school. Students may not register productions on behalf of their school.
• The MVHSTAs cannot adjudicate new, and/or unpublished, and/or student-written work during the 2022-2023 Season. Please contact the MVHSTA Team if you are a director who would like feedback on a student-written work.
