Don’t Throw Away Your Shot

The Miami Valley High School Theatre Awards celebrates local high schools producing musicals. Please refer to the following guidelines to ensure the production meets the MVHSTA requirements.

Please download and read the Theatre Director Handbook.

Musicals

Musical theatre productions should fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • A published musical, operetta, or review (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission from the original creators or their representatives.
  • A new or unpublished musical, operetta, or review (featuring an original script, music, and lyrics) presented with the approval or permission from the original creators or their representatives.
  • An original musical theatre compilation featuring excerpts or scenes from a variety of sources (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission of the original creators or their representatives.

In the future, two Dayton-area student performers will have the opportunity to go to New York City and participate in the Jimmy Awards. While this opportunity is not available this season, it will be important to consult the “Qualifying Shows And Roles” list for the Jimmy Awards to ensure your student performers are eligible for consideration.

Please do not complete this form until after you have registered and received confirmation from MVHSTA staff. Complete one detail form for each production and each cast you’d like adjudicated. This form must be completed by the theatre director or official representative from the school. Students may not complete this form on behalf of their school.

Theatre directors will be asked to complete their performance details and submit them to the MVHSTAs eight (8) weeks before their production(s). Details must be submitted no later than two (2) weeks before the first performance of the nominated production.

MVHSTA staff will reach out to theatre directors closer to the Awards Showcase for the names of the two (2) students from each school who will perform in the Awards Showcase.
